The Miracle in the Jungle: The Virgin Who Unties Knots

Published by LaloShuttle | Religious Tourism

Amidst the lush vegetation of Cancun, far from the bustle of nightclubs and crowded beaches, exists a corner of peace that has begun to attract pilgrims from all over the world. It is not a grand stone cathedral, but a rustic sanctuary, made of wood and faith: the Sanctuary of Mary Undoer of Knots.

Where does this devotion come from?

Although the sanctuary in Cancun is recent, the devotion has centuries of history. It was born in Germany in the year 1700, inspired by a painting where the Virgin Mary appears concentrated, untying knots from a long white ribbon, surrounded by angels.

It was **Pope Francis** who, while still Jorge Bergoglio, brought this devotion to Argentina and Latin America, turning it into a symbol of hope for those who feel their problems (marital, economic, or health) are "knots" impossible to undo.

"Knots are those situations in life that suffocate us and take away our peace. The Virgin, with a mother's patience, helps us untie them one by one."

The mystery of the white ribbons

Upon arriving at the sanctuary in Cancun, the first thing that strikes you is the white color. Thousands of ribbons sway with the wind among the trees. It is not decoration; they are prayers.

Tradition invites every visitor to take a white ribbon, write their petition or "knot" on it, and hang it in the sanctuary. It is a very strong act of emotional and spiritual liberation. Many return years later, not to ask, but to hang a ribbon of gratitude for the favor received.

How to visit the Sanctuary?

The sanctuary is located in the Southern Polygon of Cancun. It is an open place, in direct contact with nature (so we recommend bringing fresh clothes and repellent!).

Masses are celebrated mainly in the afternoons on weekdays and throughout the day on Sundays. However, getting there can be a challenge if you don't know the city, as public transport does not reach the entrance and taxi ranks can be expensive on the return.

Do you want to live this experience?

Don't worry about how to get there. At LaloShuttle, we offer a special round-trip transfer service with waiting time included, so you can just dedicate yourself to praying and giving thanks.
